What we do?
Kabir envisions an India where the average citizen receives government services without facing the prospect of paying a bribe. An India where elected representatives act solely in the interests of their constituency. Kabir envisions a truly democratic India where all her citizens have the information and capacities necessary to be active participants in their own governance. With such motive Kabir has been involved with action and research activities, media campaigns, workshops and preparing audio-visual-print materials. The mission is to bridge the gap between media, civil society and beaureaucracy at various levels of governance.
Firstly, much like a formal media organization, we document happenings related to the RTI Act and Swaraj (Local Self Governance) and produce audio-video and print materials. We disseminate such materials through the traditional press as well as network of NGOs and activists throughout the country to increase awareness on these issues.
Next, using these materials we take RTI and Swaraj directly to the grassroots public via various outreach events. We conduct workshops/orientation programs in villages and cities across the country to educate individuals and groups. Through such programs people are encouraged to participate in their day to day governance using provisions of RTI and acts related to LSG.
We also create platforms for various stakeholders related to RTI Act and Swaraj. These platforms sometimes provide antagonistic parties with a forum to learn from each other and strengthen their cooperation in addressing each others difficulties.
Finally, one key thread through all of our media, educational, or outreach activities is our relationship with individuals and organizations across the country who shares our vision. Without their help our reach and therefore our effectiveness would be far smaller. As such, we consider actively seeking out such partnerships and maintaining them one of our critical core activities.
